Gunman in police uniform kills volunteer traffic warden in Port Harcourt

A yet to be identified gunman in police uniform on Saturday evening shot dead on one Mr. Chukwuka Monye, at Rumuokoro roundabout, Obio-Akpor local government area in Rivers State where he was helping to ease traffic gridlock.

Monye, a father of three children was shot dead by the man in Police uniform following altercation on control of motorists at the roundabout.

According to eyewitnesses, the deceased was shot by a man on Police uniform over an argument.

The eyewitnesses claimed the killer of Monye was a member of police team in a vehicle.

According to them, the killer and his colleagues ran away in the police vehicle after Monye was killed.

They also said an angry mob later carried the corpse of the deceased in a wheelbarrow and were taken it to the Rumudomaya Special Area (Rumuokoro) Police station when they were dispersed by the Police.

The corpse was abandoned close to the station for several hours.

However, contrary to the claims of the eyewitnesses, the Rivers State Police Command, through its Spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko claimed that the killer of Monye is not a policeman “but unknown gunmen suspected to be cultists”.

Iringe-Koko through a WhatsApp message said the killers of Monye were “Unknown gunmen on Police uniform and that case has been transferred to SCID for discreet investigation”.

Meanwhile, John Monye, father of the deceased has called for thorough investigation to unravel the killer of his son.

Mr John, in an interview, said he was informed of the killing of Monye by someone through the deceased’s phone number last Saturday, April 1.

He said the caller told him that his son was shot by a man in police uniform.

The father of the deceased stated that his son was not a cultist, or a troublemaker.

He called on the police authority to investigate the killing of his son who has abruptly left his young family of a wife and his three children behind.

Meanwhile, Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign has called for thorough investigation into the incident.

The Chairman of the organization in Rivers State, Barrister IK Alexandre said the Police should carry out thorough investigation to unmask the identities of the killer(s) in order to bring the perpetrators to justice.
