One dead, millions of Naira lost as fire razes popular Lagos auto spare parts market

One person has been burnt to death as fire razed the Akere Spare Parts Market, Kirikiri Road, Akere area of Olodi-Apapa, Ajegunle, Lagos.

The fire, which began early Wednesday, burnt several shops in the market.

Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyimtolu, said the agency received distressed call around 3:28am concerning the fire outbreak in the market.

He said emergency response was activated, including the Lagos State Fire Services.

”At about 03:28 Wednesday morning, distress calls concerning a Fire outbreak at Akere Spare Parts Market, Kirikiri Road, Akere Bus Stop, Olodi-Apapa, Ajegunle, Lagos were received via the 112 emergency lines.

”Akere Spare Parts Market, Kirikiri Road, Akere Bus Stop, Olodi-Apapa, Ajegunle, LagosThe emergency response was activated including agency responders and the Lagos State Fire Service.

“Rows of shops trading in auto spare parts were found ablaze requiring additional crews and cordoning off to prevent secondary incidents due to the proximity to a Petroleum Filling Station with a fully loaded 33,000 liters PMS tanker amongst other adjoining buildings.

“A male adult fatality was recovered and transferred by SEHMU while the Lagos Neighborhood and Safety Corps, LRU prehospital care and the Red Cross were also in attendance to render first aid.

“A detailed investigation is already underway as well as post incident enumeration to account for the number of lockup shops and wares lost,” he said.
