Six people have been shot dead in a horrific mass shooting at Tate County, Mississippi, United States, the police have said.

Richard Dale Crum, 52, has been arrested in connection with the shooting on Friday, according to CNN reports.

He was said to have shot his ex-wife and five others dead in a horrific shooting, according to Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance.

Authorities got the first 911 call around 11 a.m. ET after the suspect pulled into the parking lot of a store in Arkabutla, a small rural town in northern Mississippi, and fired into the car next to him where he fatally shot the driver, Lance said.

Lance said the suspected gunman went into the store then took off, driving to his ex-wife’s home.

He added that the suspect shot and killed his ex-wife before striking her fiancé, who was also in the residence.

Crum was said to have them driven to a home next to his own residence and fatally shot a man who may have been his stepfather, as well as an unnamed woman.

He then shot two people, one inside a car and one on the road, not far from his own home. The final two victims appear to have been construction workers on a job at the site, according to Sheriff Lance, according to BBC.

Deputies spotted the suspect inside a vehicle matching witness descriptions and were able to apprehend him near his home after a brief car chase.

According to Lance, “We don’t have a lot of violent crime here. This is shocking. I never dreamt that we would deal with something like that here.”

He said the suspect had a shotgun and two handguns in his possession.
