Morocco make history, stun Portugal as Ronaldo leaves in tears

Morocco have stunned Portugal to book their spot in the semi-finals of the World Cup with a brave win.

Cristiano Ronaldo started on the bench once more for the Selecao after being left out against Switzerland, but came on early in the second period after Youssef En-Nesyri gave the African side a half-time lead. He and his team-mates couldn’t find a way through, though, and Ronaldo left the field in tears after the 1-0 defeat.

Brazil’s shock exit to Croatia on penalties on Friday, a result which has led to Neymar questioning his international future, will suddenly have got the likes of the Three Lions, France and Argentina, who beat the Dutch on penalties late on Friday, dreaming of glory in Qatar.

The fallout from the clash at the Lusail Stadium continues on Saturday, with Lionel Messi having his say, and we’ll have updates from the first quarter-final throughout the afternoon.

Cristiano Ronaldo was seen going down the tunnel in tears after Portugal’s defeat.

He’ll be 41 by the time the next World Cup gets underway. This may well have been his final chance to win the tournament, and his reaction appeared to say as much.
