The chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Walid Jibrin, has resigned from his position.

Jibrin, a former senator, announced his resignation at the PDP BoT meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

His decision to step down, he explained, is to ensure victory for the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the PDP in general.

Jibrin’s resignation comes amid calls that the party’s leadership structure be reshuffled to balance the existing lopsidedness in favour of the north.

The former BoT chairman hails from Nasarawa State.

There have also been calls for the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to resign.

Recall that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has listed the resignation of Ayu, who hails from Benue State, as a criterion for which he would support Atiku in the 2023 general elections.

Wike leads many southern leaders in the party demanding that members from that region be reflected in the party’s hierarchy ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The meeting of the BoT is still underway and is being chaired by Mr Ayu.
