A video of commuters being robbed in the early hours of the morning on the deadly Lekki-Ajah road went viral a couple of days ago.
In the queer video, the robbers were heard asking a lady and some passengers in a vehicle to exit the vehicle. The lady, however refused to budge while pleading with God to save her.
Incidents like this has become a daily feature of the life of the residents and commutters in the Lekki axis of Lagos State. Residents of the area have in recent time cried out to the police ans state government to help rescue them of criminals masquerading as beggars. They claimed that the area is being overtaken by these criminals.
Recall that in August 2021, the former CP, Hakeem Odumosu, while responding to a distress call by the residents, assured them of their safety and vowed to go after the hoodlums.
In a statement by the then state PPRO, the former police boss in the state had said: “As concerned, dutiful and very responsible Police Officers saddled with the statutory responsibility of internal security, we are not oblivious of the apparent security challenges posed by miscreants masquerading as beggars in some parts of the country particularly in Lagos State.
“In view of the foregoing, the Command is urgently interfacing, and indeed working in tandem with the State Ministry of Youth and Social Development as well as other relevant authorities to solve this social malaise.
“In reaction to the specific plight of the residents of Lekki and Ajah axis, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu whose primary concern is to provide robust security for the teeming people of Lagos State, has directed the Area Commander, DPOs, other field and tactical commanders to immediately embark on 24hrs stop and search and vehicular patrol of every nook and cranny of the affected axis and similar areas requiring additional police presence.”
The recent robbery incident has again confirmed the fears of the people concerning their safety. A resident who spoke with The Post, expressed surprise at the audaacity of the robbers. According to him, “Nobody is safe any longer. We have pleaded with security agencies to come to our rescue, but it is obvious we have been left at the mercy of the criminals.”
Another resident, Bernard, urged Governor Sanwo-olu to act now and ensure that the Lekki-Ajah area is rid of the bad boys and beggars/miscreants. “I am really scared of what may happen. These criminals are very young men and that portends serious danger for all us. Please, help to tell the governor to act now before it too late.
