The 1st edition of the Hon.Sanni Okanlawon football competition, tagged Unity Cup, will kick off with a press briefing, on Sunday, March 13, at the Elomaz Hotel, Maryland, Lagos. The competiion is sponsored by Hon Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon, the member representing Kosofe Constituency 1 at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Among dignitaries expected to grace the event are former Super Eagles players, Godwin Okpara and Wasiu Ipaye among several other notable names.
According to the coordinator of the football competition, Kemac Emina, 16 teams drawn from the seven wards that makes up Kosofe Constituency 1 will battle for the grand prize of N500, 000, a giant trophy, certificates and set of jersey for the winner.
Matches for the preliminary rounds will be played at the Beko Ransom Kuti Youth Centre, Adebayo Mokuolu Street Anthony, while the semi finals and the final matches will be played at the Araromi Youth Centre Roundabout, Gbagada Lagos.
Speaking with The Post, the sponsor of the competition, Hon Sanni Okanlawon, the member representing Kosofe Constituency 1 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, said he was motivated to sponsor the competition because of his love and desire to encourage budding footballers and sportsmen to showcase their talents and take them away from social vices.
Popularly known as OKLA by his admirers, he said: “It has always been my desire to contribute my own quota to development of sports and the youths in particular.
“All hands need to be on the deck to make sure that we discourage the youths from getting involved in vices that can ruin their future.
“And of course, I hope that new talents that will go on to play for the Super Eagles will be discovered during the competition.”
