Enugu council election: Five feared killed as gunmen attack polling units

The violence rocking parts of the sourtheast reared its ugly head again on Wednesday as some yet-to-be-identified gunmen reportedly killed five persons, injured many others, and burnt vehicles during separate attacks at two election polling units in Enugu South and Agbani council areas of Enugu State.

The incident happened during the elections for the office of the 17 council chairmen and 260 councillorship wards conducted by the state’s Independent Electoral Commission on Wednesday.

Although, the election which was marred by apathy, was largely peaceful except in Aninri, Awgu, Nkanu West and Enugu South where hoodlums reportedly rained terror.

According to sources, the gunmen invaded the polling units at Obeagu ward III in Enugu South Local Government Area and another polling unit at Akpugo in Nkanu West LGA, and disrupted the exercise.

One of the sources said the hoodlums destroyed electoral materials after chasing away voters.

The source stated further that five persons were shot and killed while some people escaped with matchet cuts and bullet wounds. They also burnt two vehicles belonging to community members who came to exercise their suffrage, the source added.

“I overheard the gunmen shouting from my hiding that they had warned that there should no longer be elections in any part of the South East,” the source recounted.
