Men of the Ebonyi State Police Command have foiled a kidnap attempt in Abakaliki, the state capital.

One of the attackers, suspected to be the leader, was killed, according to reports.

Police spokesperson, Loveth Odah, said one person abducted by the gang was rescued unhurt.

The police moved in after receiving a report on December 14 that one Nkechi Felicia Chukwu, an Abakaliki resident, was abducted from her car, Odah said.

“On the strength of the report, police operatives attached to the anti-kidnapping squad trailed the kidnappers to their hideout at New Layout Nkaliki in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the State,” she said, adding that on sighting the police team, the hoodlums opened fire.

“During the encounter one of the hoodlums who was later identified by the victim as the gang leader, sustained bullet wounds, while his gang members escaped to the nearby bush, abandoning the victim and her vehicle,” she said.

The suspect later died in hospital, Odah said, adding that one Berretta pistol, with 9mm live ammunition and Chukwu’s car were recovered from the scene.
