Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested three persons over the murder of a 60-year-old farmer, identified simply as Emmanuel.

According to reports, the victim was allegedly hacked to death by a hunter, Akporuaro Monday, for refusing to stop setting traps on his (hunter’s) farm.

The incident happened in Orogun community, Delta State.

It was further gathered that Monday killed the farmer after warning him to stop setting traps for games in his territory.

Sources said the farmer refused to heed the warning until things went awry on October 30, 2021, when the hunter allegedly killed him.

A rights activist, Israel Joe, called on the state police command to ensure that justice was served in the matter.

In a letter to the Orogun Divisional Police Officer, the activist noted that after the incident, the suspect left the community until his son was arrested.

“He was forced to return and report to your station that he murdered the victim and not his son, hence his son should be released.

“The IPO is alleged to have been convincing the family to accept settlement against the ethics and laws of the Nigeria Police Force. The family of the victim wants nothing but justice.

“A case of murder goes beyond the jurisdiction of a division and such issues should be transferred to the state CIID (Homicide) for further investigations and prosecution,” Joe added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing.
