Former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, has declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2023.

Anyim says he will contest whether the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) zones the position to the South-East or not.

Anyim, also a former Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), declared his bid on Saturday.

He told newsmen that the PDP was being repositioned as the national convention would mark the start of political activities.

Anyim said he initially distanced himself from campaign posters and calls by groups because it was early then.

The politician said the President Muhammadu Buhari administration needed to concentrate on governance.

“Such calls resurfaced in the early part of 2021 and I chose to be quiet”, NAN quoted him as saying.

“We have less than 18 months to the next elections and I feel the time is ripe to indicate my interest.”

Admitting there will be zoning, he insisted such doesn’t stop anyone from the South-East from contesting.

On PDP’s “conflict” with former Chairman, Uche Secondus, Anyim confirmed he remained a friend to many members.

“He is particularly my friend, we do not have any problem with him. The issue is that the party needed to move; he is not going into the wilderness,” said the ex-SGF.
