Two yet-to-be-identified persons have been killed in Anambra State by suspected gunmen.

The incident, which occurred around 12.30pm on Tuesday, took place opposite the Udoka housing estate in Awka, along Onitsha -Enugu expressway.

The victims, according to yewitnesses, were traders.

Recall that three policemen were killed on Monday in Onitsha by gunmen and their patrol vehicle also burnt.

A few days ago, the deposed traditional ruler of Mkpunando, Anambra East local government area, Alex Edozieuno, was assassinated by yet-to-be identified persons.

An eyewitness claimed the victims were shot at a close range by their assailants who did not take away anything from them.

The source said: “I saw them. They just shot the two guys who were businessmen in the area and drove off.

“Nothing was taken from them. I suspect it’s a case of assassination or business rivalry.”

But Anambra Police spokesman, Ikenga Tochukwu, who confirmed the incident, said it was a case of rival cults.

He said the attackers drove in a Mercedes 190 car and shot their victims who were walking on the street around 12.30pm and drove off.

Tochukwu said: “Preliminary investigation showed it was a case of rival cult war. The Commissioner of Police, Tony Olofu, has ordered investigation into the matter.”

He said the corpses of the victims had been removed from the scene of the crime by men of the Command and deposited in a mortuary.
