Bandits kidnap 60 in Zamfara

The Zamfara State Police Command yesterday confirmed the abduction of 60 people from Rini village in Zamfara State by bandits.

The black-attired bandits were said to have invaded the village on Friday night and operated till the early hours of Saturday.

According to reports, they used more than 50 motorcycles to ferry their victims. At press time, the bandits were yet to begin negotiations with relatives of their victims, most of whom are children and the aged.

It was, however gathered that security men were on their trail.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Zamfara Command, Muhammad Shehu, said: “We have the report that about 60 people were abducted from the village.”

An agency report put the number of the victims at 75.

A resident said he narrowly escaped death during the raid. His uncle was however abducted.

Another resident said his shop was looted.

The abduction is the latest by bandits who have turned Zamfara, Kaduna, Kebbi, Katsina and Niger states into their sphere of influence.
