Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has said his administration has paid out N6 billion inherited arrears of pension and gratuities.

Akeredolu said civil servants that retired during his administration have also been paid.

He spoke when he received members of the National Pension Commission led by the National Commissioner, Clement Oyedele Akintola.

The governor, who promised to continue to defray accumulated arrears of gratuities, said he braved all odds to migrate workers who were employed from September 2014 to the new pension scheme.

Akeredolu stated that the old Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) was bedevilled by encumbrances and burden, but added that genuine efforts must be made to convince workers that the new Contributory Pension Scheme is far better.

“Our workers on the new scheme are expected to live a comfortable life devoid of any form of dependency after their successful retirement from active service,” he said.

Akintola, who lauded Akeredolu for implementing the new Contributory Pension Scheme, urged the state to deploy sufficient ICT infrastructure to drive the implementation of the scheme.
