The tension between the people of Igangan, a town in Southern Oyo, and its Fulani herdsmen tenants boiled over in the middle of the night on Saturday when the town came under vicious attack, leaving several persons dead and properties razed.

Several sources have spoken about seeing several lifeless bodies of defenceless residents who were hacked to death in their homes early Sunday morning.

A viral video showed bodies of dead people, with the narrator in the background, saying “these are human bodies on the floor”

The narrator blamed the death on Fulani militias.

Prominents Yoruba, who spoke with The Post, believed the attacks were carried out by Fulani herdsmen carrying out a reprisal.

It will be recalled that the Fulani families and their leader, Abdulkadir Salihu, resident in Igangan, were forcibly removed from the town in January by aggrieved indigenous Yoruba population inspired by Sunday ‘Igboho’ Adeyemo, a self-acclaimed Yoruba warlord.

The Yoruba accused Mr Salihu, the Sarkin Fulani, of masterminding or enabling the Fulani attacks, including rape, murder, destruction of farms, and abductions. Mr Salihu denied the allegations.

A resident and youth leader in the community, Oladiran Oladokun, said that a son of Mr Salihu, Umar, had repeatedly sent him messages threatening that the Fulani would retaliate for how they were attacked and forced out of Igangan.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Oyo State, Oluseyi Makinde, said he had received the “shocking news” of the attac, calling for calm.
