We’ll keep Baba Ijesha until JUSUN resumes, police tell protesters

Published

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has said the continuous detention of Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, aka Baba Ijesha, is based on legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions in the state Ministry of Justice.

He also said the actor would not be released until the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria called off its nationwide strike and the courts resumed so that he could be arraigned.

Odumosu stated these in reaction to Wednesday’s protest by Omiyinka’s colleague, Yomi Fabiyi, and others, who demonstrated at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, to demand his release on bail.

He said based on the legal advice, a prima facie case had been established against Omiyinka, adding that the thespian’s continued detention was based on the DPP’s advice.

Odumosu said, “When they got the SCIID today (Wednesday), they were advised by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the SCIID, and he told them that we have done our work and sought legal advice from the Ministry of Justice and the advice was that we should still keep him in our custody.

“When we concluded our investigation, we forwarded our report to the ministry for legal advice. The ministry advised us through the Office of the Public Defender. The legal advice was that there was a prima facie case established against him and some sections of the law were quoted in the advice. So, the advice was that he should still remain in our custody and to be charged for that.”

Odumosu said the ministry might review its position concerning Omiyinka’s detention if the JUSUN strike continues indefinitely, adding that a new arrangement had been made in the state for courts to sit three times a week.

The CP said, “Regarding the JUSUN strike, they agreed to be working for three days and striking for two days. They will go on strike on Monday and Tuesday, while the courts will sit on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

“It was our hope that they would work on Wednesday, but coincidentally, Wednesday and Thursday are public holidays. But if the courts continue to remain shut, the Ministry of Justice may further review the report. But right now, we are relying on the advice of the ministry.”

Omiyinka has been in detention since he was arrested for alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl, who is in the care of a comedienne, Adekola Adekoya, aka Princess.

During the demonstration on Wednesday, the protesters demanded that Omiyinka should be released on bail.

Fabiyi, who led the demonstration, said he was not in support of the allegations levelled against Omiyinka, but noted that what he was clamouring for was for his fundamental human rights to be respected.

He also condemned re-traumatising the victim in a bid to gather evidence, explaining that such a measure would have negative implications on society.

Addressing the protesters, DCP Adegoke Fayoade, who is in charge of the SCIID, stated that the ongoing strike by judiciary workers had impeded Baba Ijesha’s arraignment.

“Baba Ijesha’s case, as we are aware, has gone to the DPP. And the DPP has advised us on what to do. What we are waiting for is for the courts to resume; as soon as the courts resume, we will arraign him,” he said.

Address acute hunger in Yorubaland, YOV charges FG, S/West Govs

…Iba Gani Adams,Omisakin others restate need for effective food security

Foremost diaspora coalition, Yoruba One Voice (YOV), has charged the Federal Government and governors of the six states in the South West region to address the spreading hunger in Yorubaland and make agriculture more attractive to the people of the South West region.

The Yoruba One Voice made the appeal at the weekend at the end of its quarterly conference held via zoom, with no fewer than 500 participants online from across the six continent of the world where the diaspora organization is located.

The conference, with the theme: “Rescuing Yoruba Nation From Hunger, your Task, my Task, according to YOV,was a timely intervention strategy serving as a wake up call to both the Federal Government and the South West Governors to devise a better approach to make agriculture more
attractive to the people of the region.

In his opening remarks, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, who is also the convener of YOV, Iba Gani Abiodun Ige Adams, said the reason for the YOV’s quarterly conference is to impress it on the government at all levels to work on the best approach at solving the problem of hunger in Yoruba land

“In Nigeria today, the acute hunger across the country does not know the tribe or the region. It does not know the colour of our skin and the dialect we speak as a race.It is a general issue that needs urgent solution”.

Iba Adams identified rising spate of insecurity, killings and kidnapping of farmers as one of the factors, lack of adequate support in terms of getting loan facility, which he also described as the obvious lacuna between the south and the northern farmers, movement of the young and abled youths from the village to the cities in search of White collar job,as well as lack of adequate knowledge on the modern and mechanized farming.

While proffering solution to the hunger in Yoruba land, Iba Adams gave insights into what he termed agric revolution, saying efforts should be made on improving livestock production as that is more lucrative than the other aspects of farming.

He a gave a clear financial analysis of the money spent daily on cows across south west region, insisting that more could be done in making agriculture more attractive.

“Nigeria is a blessed country and Yoruba land is even the greatest beneficiary of God’s blessings.

“This is evident in the way we plant our farm produce.Within a few days you see your seed grow with pride. All over the world, agriculture is a global business.Whether micro or macro agriculture.

“The success depends largely on the need to expand the scope and advance the technological and mechanical advantage in the agric production.

“Today,Nigeria and the South West is no longer the largest producer of cocoa, but we can still dictate and drive the market if the governors can do a reform that can help our agric sector.

“In today’s world, there are ways to plant and harvest cocoa within a short period of time.Let me say two to three years. And you get your results. We cannot use the old methods to solve today’s problems.

“More importantly, another major factor that has affected our farmers in the South West is the obvious loan facility lacuna between the Northern farmers and the Southern farmers.

Meanwhile, the guest speaker, prince Adeyemi Omisakin,in his address also dwelled on the need to focus more on giving the necessary support to the farmers.

Omisakin, however, regretted that the emergence of civilisation and the growing shapes of modernism, gradually erode the respect given to farmers, saying farming is a noble job that had been socially reduced to the works of the peasants, the illiterates or the commoners. Hence, the reference to farmers as Ara oko, a be do paa li. (The villagers with thick livers or senseless being).

“There’s need to focus on not only the need for the present Yoruba societies to return to the lands, but how to also conduct productive farming activities effectively, even at cheaper rates, so as to rescue our already degenerated societies from the pangs of present hunger and to regain our nobilities among comity of nations.

He urged the Federal Government and the six governors of the South West region to look inwards in addressing the basic problem of hunger by giving adequate support to locally made products.

“There is also dirt of local food production while the prices of imported food increases almost every day as a result of exchange rates, among other factors.

“Over dependence on imported foods such as rice, a bag which is sold at more than eighty thousand at the moment. Beans is even costlier. In fact, the yet to be paid new minimum wage in the country can not even buy a bag of either of them”.

Also, the YOV General Secretary, prince Adedokun Ademiluyi, said in his remarks that with Nigeria’s huge population of about 230 people, there is need for adequate food security.

“Nigerian government must address the issue of food shortage and hunger as urgent as it is possible.
No country of Nigeria’s population can survive the growing threats that is emanating from spreading hunger if it didn’t take good care of its huge population. It will be a major disaster for Nigeria to continue to live in denial, without making adequate plan for its huge population as the need for food security is very important now than before”.

Meanwhile, Professor Kolawole Raheem, in his remarks, said the present administration must work out a well- coordinated regional
template that will include all the six states in the south west.

He added that the intention is to
to address food scarcity in Yoruba land and further strengthen the bond that will enhanced agricultural prospects in the South West.

“Let us revive the farm settlement created by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo across Yoruba land.It will go a long way in solving all the problems associated with hunger and famine in Yoruba land”.

Iyalode Abike Ade also emphasized the need to boost local farming in Yoruba land, adding that grassroots farming across south west has the potentials of saving Yoruba land from hunger.

She added also that YOV will not relent in its efforts to address the fundamental issues affecting the Yoruba race.

“We are a blessed race and the best we can do now is to engage in local farming that will take care of our needs at the grassroots level”.

Pope slams Israel for ‘immoral’ use of force in Gaza, Lebanon

Pope Francis on Sunday slammed the “immoral” use of force in Lebanon and Gaza, amid ongoing Israeli strikes in both places.

“A country that acts this way with force, no matter the country, and that acts in such an excessive manner, (lends itself to) immoral actions,” said Francis when asked about the consequences of Israeli airstrikes on civilians aboard a flight back to Rome from Belgium.

“Defence must always be proportional to the attack. When this is not the case, a dominating tendency appears that goes beyond morality,” the 87-year-old pontiff said in Italian.

“Even in war there is a morality to defend. War is immoral, but the rules of war indicate a form of morality,” Francis said.
